Ilhan Omar is an American Politician who is currently working as the US Representative for the 5th congressional district of Minnesota. He has been working as the US representative since 2019 and is also a member of the Democratic Farmer Labour Party. Before getting elected to Congress, she served for two years in the Minnesota House of Representatives, where she represented a small part of Minneapolis. Early life
Ilhan was born on 4th October 1982 in Mogadishu, Somalia. She spent her early childhood in Baidoa, Somalia, and has seven siblings and was the toughest one. Her father’s name is Nur Omar Mohamed, and he worked as a colonel in the Somali army as well as a teacher trainer. Her mother died when Ilhan was two years old, and her name was Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein. She grew up with her grandfather and father. Her grandfather was the director of the National Marine Transport of Somalia. She completed her higher education at Thomas Edison High School. She got graduated from North Dakota State University in international studies and political science in the year 2011.

Growing up in Somalia was difficult for her. Because of the extreme political instability, her family understood they had to get the kids out of the country. Not having a mother was only one of her many challenges as a kid. Her relatives in Mogadishu had to leave their house because of the violence. After a long journey, they arrived at the Dadaab refugee camp in Garissa County, Kenya, near the Somali border. Before being granted refuge in the United States, her family endured harsh conditions at the camp for four years. New York City was their first stop when they were granted entry to the United States. Even though they came in 1995, they moved to Arlington, Virginia. They were only there briefly until her dad found work as a cab driver in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where the family eventually moved. Ilhan acted as her grandfather’s translator when she was fourteen. She often attended caucus sessions, for which she often served as an interpreter. This was her first taste of electoral politics. Those early years were formative, and she still considered the lessons she learned during the sessions. Omar may be one of the younger faces in Washington, but she did not begin her career in politics. She worked as a community nutrition educator in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. In the years 2006–2009, she served in this position. Ilhan worked as a Humphrey School of Public Affairs policy fellow. They promoted her to senior policy aide in the Minneapolis City Council. In 2016, she won the election to represent Minnesota House District 60B.
