Katie was born in Arlington, Virginia, United States. Her father is John Martin Couric, Jr., who worked as a public relations executive in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Her mother’s name is Elinor Tullie is a housewife and also works as a writer part-time. Katie’s siblings are Clara Couric Batchelor, Emily Couric, and John M. Couric Jr. Katie spent her early life in her birthplace Arlington and later moved to Presbyterian and was raised there with her parents and siblings.

Katie was first married to Jay Monahan in 1989, and on July 23, 1991, they welcomed their first child daughter, Elinor Tully, in Washington, D.C. 

On January 5, 1996, their second daughter was born in New York City, and her name is Caroline.
