Cheryl was physically assaulted on April 23, 2008, while on her dinner break; as she walked in the state street near Washington St, an unknown man named Gregory Perdue punched Cheryl and knocked her to the ground, she was injured in her head.  At first, she thought it was shot, but then she had a CAT scan, and an X-Ray showed that she had no damage.  Because of the attack, she has suffered from headaches for many months.

Chicago Association of Black Journalists honored him with Russ Ewing Award in 2004.  In 1998, Cheryl won the Kizzy Image and achievement award; in 1997, she won the Phenomenal Women Award.  Cheryl first won the CABJ award for her coverage work for the Million Man March.  Besides the success in her profession, she is a beautiful human being and has also contributed to many community services.  In 2005, she won the Sisters in the Spirit award and was the first human to win it.  In 2009, Cheryl won the Procter & Gamble award.
